Since it is considered auspicious to be buried near a saint’s grave, seven centuries of tomb building has led to the area becoming the densest ensemble of medieval Islamic buildings in India.Ĭriteria (ii): Humayun’s garden-tomb is built on a monumental scale, grandeur of design and garden setting with no precedence in the Islamic world for a mausoleum. The tomb stands in an extremely significant archaeological setting, centred at the Shrine of the 14 th century Sufi Saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. Humayun’s garden-tomb is also called the ‘ dormitory of the Mughals’ as in the cells are buried over 150 Mughal family members. The structure is of dressed stone clad in red sandstone with white and black inlaid marble borders. This octagonal plan is repeated on the second storey. The interior is a large octagonal chamber with vaulted roof compartments interconnected by galleries or corridors. The middle of each side is deeply recessed by large arched vaults with a series of smaller ones set into the facade. It is surmounted by a 42.5 m high double dome clad with marble flanked by pillared kiosks (chhatris) and the domes of the central chhatris are adorned with glazed ceramic tiles. It has an irregular octagon plan with four long sides and chamfered edges. The mausoleum itself stands on a high, wide terraced platform with two bay deep vaulted cells on all four sides. The garden is entered from lofty gateways on the south and from the west with pavilions located in the centre of the eastern and northern walls. Humayun’s garden-tomb is an example of the charbagh (a four quadrant garden with the four rivers of Quranic paradise represented), with pools joined by channels. Persian and Indian craftsmen worked together to build the garden-tomb, far grander than any tomb built before in the Islamic world. Humayun’s Tomb was built in the 1560’s, with the patronage of Humayun’s son, the great Emperor Akbar. that includes other contemporary, 16 th century Mughal garden-tombs such as Nila Gumbad, Isa Khan, Bu Halima, Afsarwala, Barber’s Tomb and the complex where the craftsmen employed for the Building of Humayun’s Tomb stayed, the Arab Serai. Humayun’s Tomb stands within a complex of 27.04 ha. Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi is the first of the grand dynastic mausoleums that were to become synonyms of Mughal architecture with the architectural style reaching its zenith 80 years later at the later Taj Mahal.

We requested yet another room only this time at another resort after contacting our Westjet rep Crisia, she assured us that the management team at the resort lead by David could take care of any issues we had. We requested a room change and were obliged, we were now facing the opposite direction towards the RIU Jalisco, which seemed fine, until their disco fired up at about 10pm and shut down most nights at 2am, so again, if sleep is something you cherish, this wont work. We had been assigned a balcony room facing the courtyard upon arrival, which was initially great, but unfortunately we had not realized it faced directly at the resorts disco, the disco gets going at 11pm and goes hard and loud until 1am so if you want to get some sleep, these rooms are not for you. The rooms could use some sprucing up to alleviate some of the wear and tear especially in the bathrooms. In 2019 Schwartz received the American Cancer Society’s Eugene D. Schwartz is an exceptionally accomplished cancer investigator with extensive experience leading clinical research programs at major cancer centers,” said Gerson, also the university’s senior vice president for medical affairs. “I am thrilled we could attract him to this position.” In addition, he is leading two federally supported training programs for more junior investigators pursuing cancer-related research. He currently directs Columbia’s Minority/Underserved Site NCI Community Oncology Research Program (MU-NCORP), as well as several other funded grant programs involving clinical trials of treatments for sarcoma. Schwartz has spent more than three decades pursuing novel approaches to treat and cure sarcomas-tumors that begin in bone and tissue-as well as melanoma (more commonly known as skin cancer). My vision is to now lead the Case CCC with advances in cancer medicine, with the ultimate goal of curing this disease. This is possible through the extraordinary excellence of the consortium of institutions that constitute the Case CCC, through which the coordination of scholarship, research, education, and community outreach will be its primary core goals.” “I am also humbled to follow in the footsteps of Stan Gerson. “I am honored and excited to have this opportunity to lead the Case CCC,” Schwartz said. The extraordinary honor recognized the cancer center’s record of sustained excellence and ongoing progress. Three years later, the NCI made the Case CCC the first in the country to receive a two-year merit extension of its grant. That’s the best battery life of all the e-readers we tested and should last the regular reader weeks even if they read for an hour every night.īest budget e-reader: Kindle Paperwhite (11th Gen) It took us just seconds to connect our pair of Pixel Buds to the Oasis and start listening.įinally, the battery on the Oasis charges from 0% to 100% in just an hour, and it will last an estimated 50 hours with brightness set to 12 and Airplane Mode turned on. There are also a plethora of ways to customize your reading experience on the Oasis, including 14 font size settings, five boldness settings, nine fonts (including one to help those with dyslexia), two orientations, three margin settings, two alignment settings and three spacing settings, not to mention the ability to highlight favorite passages and connect your Goodreads account.īecause the Oasis has Bluetooth connectivity, you’ll also be able to pair wireless headphones to the device and listen to audiobooks through it. We even dunked it in the pool and took it out in the rain with no issue. We took the e-reader out under the sun, on a train and poolside and had no issues being able to read the text on the screen. The 7-inch E Ink Carta screen on the Oasis is both waterproof and glare-free. If you’re reading in bed while a partner is trying to sleep, it’s also a great way to minimize disturbing them. It may seem like a small addition, but it went a long way in helping our eyes adjust to the light. In addition to being able to adjust the display brightness, we were also able to adjust the color temperature of the light, filtering out blue light that could negatively affect your eyes at night. One of our favorite features of the Oasis is its warmth brightness setting, a feature not found on the other Kindles we tested. The Kobo readers do let you check out books directly from Overdrive, making them a good choice if that’s your primary interest in an e-reader (though we prefer the Kindles enough that we generally think it’s worth the slight inconvenience of borrowing from another device). You can also read MOBI files and PDFs on your Kindle by emailing them to the device itself, and EPUB files by converting them to MOBI files using free online software. We had no issue checking out and returning books after setting up an Overdrive account with our library card. However, you can easily check out e-books via Overdrive on your computer or the Overdrive app on your tablet or phone and read them on the Kindle - just follow these instructions. Kindle readers don’t directly support Overdrive, a free service that allows you to borrow books using your library card. Related: Amazon’s Kindle Scribe makes reading and writing a joy - for a high price. We were able to easily find every book we searched for, even brand-new releases on their publication date. If you’re not an Amazon Prime or Kindle Unlimited subscriber, you can still purchase books on an individual basis from the Kindle store. Amazon Prime subscribers will have access to Prime Reading, which includes around 1,000 free titles that rotate on a periodic basis, but you can also register for Kindle Unlimited ($9.99 per month), a separate subscription that gives you access to over a million books and audiobooks. From there, you’ll then be able to search for books directly from the device itself. Upon setup of the e-reader, you’ll be asked to sign in with your Amazon account if you have one and connect to Wi-Fi, all of which can be done in just about a minute. While you don’t technically need an Amazon account to use the Kindle Oasis, you’ll probably want to register in order to have access to the millions of Kindle books available from the Kindle library. (Seriously, our hand never felt tired holding this thing.) Its square design is also comfortable enough to hold one-handed for hours at a time. Thanks to the Oasis’ 1-inch-thick bezel, your hand has a place to rest and it won’t accidentally brush up against the touch screen - a problem we had with other e-readers we tested. We returned to it over and over in our testing due to its comfortable feel in the hand, well-placed page-turn buttons and multiple brightness and color temperature settings that let us read easily in different settings. Simply put, the Kindle Oasis is a dream to read on. In a conference room meeting, for instance, such a system might be deployed instead of a central microphone, allowing better control of in-room audio. This allows the system to be moved between environments and set up automatically. Like a fleet of Roombas, each about an inch in diameter, the microphones automatically deploy from, and then return to, a charging station. With the help of the team’s deep-learning algorithms, the system lets users mute certain areas or separate simultaneous conversations, even if two adjacent people have similar voices. The ability to locate and control sound - isolating one person talking from a specific location in a crowded room, for instance - has challenged researchers, especially without visual cues from cameras.Ī team led by researchers at the University of Washington has developed a shape-changing smart speaker, which uses self-deploying microphones to divide rooms into speech zones and track the positions of individual speakers. In a bustling cafe, there are no buttons to silence the table beside you. But for the most part, this ability doesn’t translate easily to recording in-person gatherings.
